What is Lunar New Year?
Saturday, 10 February marks 2024’s Lunar New Year (also known as Chinese New Year). In China, East Asia and across the world, people will celebrate the occasion by coming together to eat with family and friends, enjoy colourful festivities, and pray for good fortune in the coming year.
Also known as the Spring Festival, the New Year celebrations are intended to bring luck and prosperity as people bid the old year farewell and welcome the new one. Alongside feasts with relatives and clothing and decorations decked in red, there are many outdoor performances featuring dancing, firecrackers, and fireworks.
Celebrations for Lunar New Year commence with the rising of the second new moon after the winter solstice (21 December). This can happen on any date between 21 January and 20 February. The celebrations can last up to 16 days and culminate with the Lantern Festival (taking place on 24 February this year).
Similar to Western astrology, there are 12 Chinese zodiacs. But instead of one for each month, the animal is for the entire year. 2024 is the Year of the Dragon. In Chinese culture, attributes of the dragon include power, energy, vitality, romance, and leadership.
